Discussion:
Apps broken in The Android-x86 4.4-r3 and The latest Android-x86 5.1-rc1

I just wanted to know if this is normal. Only some of my apps aren't working now. Skype is broken, Camera is broken and a lot of old 2D games don't seem to run to well either. 3D games run a lot better but I had seen that as one of the main fixes in 5.1-rc1. I know this is in alpha/beta so its expected that things are either broken or tend to break from time to time so I just wanted to know if this is happening to anybody else.

As far as I know in 5.1-rc 1 camera works fine and some other games too but Skype doesn't work due to arm libraries

Interesting I had Skype working in previous versions up until 4.4 where it
broke completely as well as other apps that used to work one of them being
Striker 1945 that shmup game. As for camera I guess it would work however
the app to use it locks up and for some reason I can't move forward with
it.

There seems to be a lot of files in there. I'm going to attach some screen

Hey Eric did you manage to get the following apps working (I installed them from google play but they keep crashing or going to black screen)

Angry Birds, Periscope, Facebook messenger, Snapchat and apps like whatsapp and instagram can't even be installed cause the OS image is a tablet and it needs to be a phone to instal those apps

You said you got Skype to work and games did you try any other type of apps?

Thanks so much for your comments

Instagram worked fine on Kitkat.
I don't think this has anything to do whether the device is detected as
a phone or a tablet.

(there are tablets with phone functionality).

Yeah I don't believe it has anything to do with that. We have to remember
that this is in development so any of the issues that I am having can be in
regards to issues with development and could be bug related.

In previous versions I had a lot of apps working as said in the 4.4-r3 and
the latest 5.1 most apps have stopped working. The ones that often do
which were broken before were 3D accelerated games. Facebook is working
fine for me. Skype worked before and is broken since 4.4-r3. Striker 1945
and sequels ran very well before 4.4-r3 and are now broken. If you guys
need information regarding my laptop I have a ASUS F7S.

You should check this option and then try to run Skype but first connect to
a good stable network and wait for some time so that arm libraries can be
downloaded automatically by the system. After some time check arm folder

Hey Guys,

After enabling App Compatibility Apps like Snapchat and Facebook messenger
finally worked after I installed them form Google Play YAYY :) thank you!!

However Apps like Angry Birds and Google Maps get blacks screens as if
there is some graphical issue. Angry Birds is completely black and Google
Maps is only black on the actual Map section (the right side) but the left
where you type in the location and see a picture of the city works.

Any idea guys? :) wonder what the issue is hmm :/

thank you for the advice. I tried it on 4.4 rc3 and it actually is the
exact same errors. Here's the whole picture:

1.) I'm running the Virtualbox on a Mac OSX
2.) Both 5.1 and 4.4 give the following results (all apps where installed
from the Google Play Store App):

- Snapchat & Facebook Messenger are working great
- Youtube and Vimeo allow me to watch videos
- Angry Birds goes into a black screen when I turn it on
- Google Maps: I can see the part on the left where I type in the area and
see the picture the place but the map portion of the screen (the right
side) is pure black.

It seems to be some graphical issue but I can't seem to locate the exact
problem. :)

thank you very much in advance anyone who might know :)

Hello Chih-Wei Huang,

Might you know what the problem is that is going on with the Angry birds
and Google Maps apps when I download them from Google Play? Why the Screen
is black?

Also do you know I could change it from being a tablet to a phone? Is it
possible to go to the build.prop to change the identification?

It would allow me to download apps like WhatsApp that sadly are not
compatible for Tablets. Or a few others.

thank you very much in advance

Do you think it has something to do with the machine you are running
Virtualbox on?

I'm using a Mac and a Windows. Maybe a Linux machine will fix the graphical
issues. Or are there some drivers I should instal to get the VirtualBox
running better.

thank you very much in advance

"Not good" is a very imprecise and non-technical word. It doesn't provide
any useful information we can address.
A useful report should include your test environment and devices
(especially the graphic chip in this case), the problematic scenarios, and
related debug information (logcat, dmesg, ...)

I can tell you how to configure your mouse and keyboard for playing game if
you want
Post by Eric Frendo-Cumbo
Okay well I have a touch pad but for some reason that is emulating the
mouse. I wouldn't mind doing keyboard and mouse either that would really
help getting some games to run. I can't currently play those Relic run and
jump games cause the mouse isn't emulated to play them.
I'll State again, Because in one way or another I believe this needs to
be an Option, I'm STILL RUNNING 4.4-RC2 because Fuzzy Made a Kernel for me,
The Kernel Emulates the TOUCH SCREEN with a Synaptics Touchpad, and Works
with a Mouse (As a Mouse), So I have the Best of BOTH worlds on an OLD 1750
Dell Inspiron.....
Mike
Eric I know how to play games using mouse and keyboard and I have played
many popular games using keyboard and mouse but it is difficult for me to
make other people understand how to do but maybe I'll make a video

I wanted to know is there any way of getting the games to control with
the keyboard or other devices cause some people like myself don't have a
touch screen. If there is I'd like to know.

I installed Asphalt 8 on 5.1 and 4.4.4 both and 5.1 graphics were not
good as compared to 4.4.4 that's how I concluded.
"Not good" is a very imprecise and non-technical word. It doesn't
provide any useful information we can address.
A useful report should include your test environment and devices
(especially the graphic chip in this case), the problematic scenarios, and
related debug information (logcat, dmesg, ...)

"Not good" is a very imprecise and non-technical word. It doesn't
provide any useful information we can address.
A useful report should include your test environment and devices
(especially the graphic chip in this case), the problematic scenarios, and
related debug information (logcat, dmesg, ...)

graphics were not good as compared to 4.4.4 that's how I concluded.
"Not good" is a very imprecise and non-technical word. It
doesn't provide any useful information we can address.
A useful report should include your test environment and
devices (especially the graphic chip in this case), the problematic
scenarios, and related debug information (logcat, dmesg, ...)

Eric which version of Android0x86 are you using?

The only way is if and when they have external monitor output and use a
recorder with HDMI capture. I was able to get external output to work with
VGA but capturing that is a pain and more expensive.
It'll be a lot easier for me if someone can tell how to record screen
in 4.4.4 r3
Just explore it by yourself or otherwise I'll tell you
On Nov 16, 2015 12:59 AM, "Eric Frendo-Cumbo" <

auto control sets it doesn't allow me to set keys manually.

Thanks for the help i'll check this out. How about for some of the
games that won't accept the touch of the mouse/trackpad. For some reason
games like Temple Run 1 & 2 don't work cause it asks you to tap the screen
but for some reason the mouse/trackpad don't work.

Okay everyone so I looked around on the net and found only one
video for using Keyboard and mouse as a control method for any app. So
what your going to need is USB/Joystick Center and joy2touch server. Its
not available at the Google Play store anymore however there is some APK
that can be found using Google's search engine. I'm not listing it here in
case of piracy issues. You can watch a video here that is a little sketchy
on how to get it to work. There is a lot of things your going to have to
do to get this to work right for sensitivity and of course for other games
cause they will have different play schemes.

Yes only a few break with internet connection errors but most work fine
for me. The Tincore tends to have issues still. I'm using the laptop
keyboard and usb mouse and sometimes it sends me command prompt or just
breaks altogether.

It would likely be either the OS or my crappy laptop it was given to me
and not in great shape. So things break every now and then but I'll
continue to test to see if I have further issues.
Post by محمد شہریار منور
I don't know why it is like this for you what are your laptop specs? Or
maybe it's the problem with lollipop because I am using it on KitKat
Post by Eric Frendo-Cumbo
Yes only a few break with internet connection errors but most work fine
for me. The Tincore tends to have issues still. I'm using the laptop
keyboard and usb mouse and sometimes it sends me command prompt or just
breaks altogether.

The only way is if and when they have external monitor output and
use a recorder with HDMI capture. I was able to get external output to
work with VGA but capturing that is a pain and more expensive.

Thanks for the help i'll check this out. How about for some of
the games that won't accept the touch of the mouse/trackpad. For some
reason games like Temple Run 1 & 2 don't work cause it asks you to tap the
screen but for some reason the mouse/trackpad don't work.

suppose he might be on to something if we can wait hopefully we will have
the solution to the control issues.
On Fri, Nov 13, 2015 at 2:27 PM, Eric Frendo-Cumbo <
Okay everyone so I looked around on the net and found only
one video for using Keyboard and mouse as a control method for any app. So
what your going to need is USB/Joystick Center and joy2touch server. Its
not available at the Google Play store anymore however there is some APK
that can be found using Google's search engine. I'm not listing it here in
case of piracy issues. You can watch a video here that is a little sketchy
on how to get it to work. There is a lot of things your going to have to
do to get this to work right for sensitivity and of course for other games
cause they will have different play schemes.

I think we could very much understand to do it if its just
a plain app that allows us to do it. I think this is just a tease and that
isn't funny.

When I'll install it again then I'll show you.
it's extremely hard for a developer to very what's a
persons eyes sees....therefore PROOF
is needed, that's why there are logs....sometimes one
person doesn't see what a developer does and
therefore the information gets skewed and post / answers
tend to go on...and on...and on......and the real
issue never gets addressed......so just provide the
information requested if possible...!!!

I installed Asphalt 8 on 5.1 and 4.4.4 both and 5.1
graphics were not good as compared to 4.4.4 that's how I concluded.
"Not good" is a very imprecise and non-technical word.
It doesn't provide any useful information we can address.
A useful report should include your test environment
and devices (especially the graphic chip in this case), the problematic
scenarios, and related debug information (logcat, dmesg, ...)

I do remember there was a small issue with Uno Friends and possibly that is
the reason why you are saying its unplayable. I believe if I remember
correctly you had to put in your age I can't remember the trick I did but I
believe I used the virtual Keyboard and typed my age then pressed next and
you were on your way. You don't need Tincore to play the game either it
works out of the box.

Another issue I have is with the Mic. I've tried using the ALSA app and it
doesn't do any better. However what it does is record noise its not even
usable for Skype conversations. Like I said this laptop is pretty mashed
up a friend gave it to me and the only reason for using it was this nice
little project. For me the system is starting to run better. I found
turning off notifcations for Facebook, Messenger and Skype help cause the
system takes time to load all the information of messages you received
friends and trust me it can be a big number if you go days without using
your machine.

okay i'll give that a test. I really wish I could get the camera to work

reason the OS turns the Camera upside down.

I've tried both methods of course I got the root error so I used Turbo
Editor. Went to System/etc then opened init.sh. Changed the Internal Mic
Boost to Internal Mic and of course changed the 3 to 1. I boot up my
system and the Android logo is removed and will no longer boot. No
worries I do know I can reinstall without format and that'll fix the
init.sh file.
Try turning mic volume to 2 or 1. Mine was set to 3 and all it recorded
was static..

lol how do i do this
Verify your file permissions. And in my version there was already an
internal mic and mic boost... So instead of changing I'd just add.

Another issue I have is with the Mic. I've tried using the ALSA app
and it doesn't do any better. However what it does is record noise its not
even usable for Skype conversations. Like I said this laptop is pretty
mashed up a friend gave it to me and the only reason for using it was this
nice little project. For me the system is starting to run better. I found
turning off notifcations for Facebook, Messenger and Skype help cause the
system takes time to load all the information of messages you received
friends and trust me it can be a big number if you go days without using
your machine.

I do remember there was a small issue with Uno Friends and possibly
that is the reason why you are saying its unplayable. I believe if I
remember correctly you had to put in your age I can't remember the trick I
did but I believe I used the virtual Keyboard and typed my age then pressed
next and you were on your way. You don't need Tincore to play the game
either it works out of the box.

Just use the x86 version one, don't use x86-64, the 64-bit kernel is
unstable with x86 android

I may already be using the x86 version as far as I know. There is an
option to install EFI bootloader but my system of course doesn't take
advantage of that being an older machine using the legacy bios method.

Have you guys managed to get Snapchat working in any of the Android
versions?

It opens for me but then crashes when I attempt to sign in. Guess it's
something related to the camera...
Post by Eric Frendo-Cumbo
I just wanted to know if this is normal. Only some of my apps aren't
working now. Skype is broken, Camera is broken and a lot of old 2D games
don't seem to run to well either. 3D games run a lot better but I had seen
that as one of the main fixes in 5.1-rc1. I know this is in alpha/beta so
its expected that things are either broken or tend to break from time to
time so I just wanted to know if this is happening to anybody else.

I found out the issue for me was that my computer wasn't fully compatible.
Do note that this is still in early stages so its possible that, that is
the reason why a lot of things don't work properly.
